Keratin treatment is a popular fix when it comes to luscious beautiful locks. For the unversed, keratin is a protein naturally found in your skin, hair, and nails that keeps your hair strong and healthy. So, keratin treatments can help you get luscious, beautiful locks that help keep the hair straight and frizz-free for months. But like any other treatment, it can also have side effects. Whether or not you should go for a keratin treatment is a heavily debated topic because of the long-lasting straightening benefits and the harmful chemicals it contains.
Side effects of keratin treatment
Keratin hair treatment is a treatment that helps you get smooth, lustrous, and frizz-free hair. However, you have to be extra careful as your hair would require more attention than usual. While most of the time, keratin treatment may help you get beautiful hair temporarily, it can also lead to some side effects. One of the most common side effects of getting this treatment is making your hair vulnerable to breakage and damage.
The Food and Drug Administration, USA has warned that keratin treatment includes the use of formaldehyde (carcinogenic) and other related compounds that can lead to a range of problems. While it can lead to a range of health problems, it can also up your risk of developing cancer.
Natural ways to manage the side effects of keratin-treated hair
Dr Suyomi Shah, an MD Dermatologist and Certified Trichologist, recently took to her Instagram account to share that keratin treatment can lead to side effects, including hair fall. Popularly known as Dr Su, she also suggests some natural ways to manage the side effects of keratin-treated hair.

1. Natural hair oil to the rescue
Dr Su recommends mixing 2-3 drops of rosemary oil with a tablespoon of carrier oil like almond or argan oil to tackle the side effects. Whether or not keratin treatment took a toll on your hair health, this one should be on your home remedy list for hair care. Rosemary oil is believed to stimulate hair growth and prevent premature ageing and dandruff in your hair. Even almond and argan oil contains properties that can be beneficial for your hair.
2. Eat a healthy diet
Never underestimate the power of a healthy diet! If you want to protect your hair from damage naturally, you might want to eat a diet rich in proteins like tofu, lentils, chickpeas, and beans. She says that eating a protein-rich diet can be “beneficial for your hair health and prevent hair fall.”
3. Avoid heating tools
Regardless of any treatment, you should avoid using heating tools such as blow dryers, curling iron, straightener, etc., on your hair. Not only would they damage your hair, but these products will also make your hair more prone to breakage and hair fall, writes the dermatologist.
